  • I've been shopping here for 30+ years. It has actually gotten better over the years. I simply love this place. The main parking lot is still under construction which makes parking difficult at peak times. Heck, it makes parking difficult period. Because of all the restaurants and businesses here now. The lot was full at lunch time this past Tuesday. A day the market is closed. Going early is your best friend here. More on that in a minute. Anyway, once construction is done I'm sure it will be great. The market is divided into 2 main sections. Outside 2 long hallways is the produce area. The main building is where you can find meats, bakery, spices, food vendors, and more. It's set up like an old world European open air market. It's awesome and the quality of the stuff here can't be beat. BRING CASH. Not all vendors take credit cards. Some do and you have to ask. Here's just a *few* of the places I like and why: BASKETERIA PRODUCE: All organic. Great prices. Their quality if top notch. Plus, it's by the exit and is easy to hit on the way out. BOUTROS BROTHERS PRODUCE: What I can't get at Basketeria I can get here. They really take good care of you and everything is high quality. FRUITS: I don't buy a lot of fruits here. But there are some amazing deals on produce and fruits overall. Especially when it gets close to closing. DOHAR / LOVASZY: A Hungarian stop. Buy the Paprika if they have it. They grow and make their own. It's like getting some from Hungary. It's amazing. Their smoked garlic sausage usually makes it way on some meat and cheese trays over the course of the year. Some of the foods here make my Hungarian meals taste like I'm in Budapest. THE CHEESE SHOP: Where I go to round out my meat and cheese tray. I tell them what I'm looking for. Their recommendations are always spot on. URBAN HERBS: I replace my spice cabinet every fall. I come here to do it. I've also heard local chefs get their herbs from here as well. CZUCHRAJ MEATS: This place has the best beef jerky I've ever tried :-) Get the spicy. STEVE'S GYRO: The line for a Gyro here can be 20+ deep at lunch time. Because it will be the best Gyro you've ever had. The small is the biggest you can get probably anywhere. Get the large and I hope you have someone helping you eat it. FRANK'S BRAT: I've been getting a Brat on a hard roll to eat here since I was 10 years old. I had one this morning at 8:30 AM. Best breakfast ever! CREPES DE LUXE: These are hand made in front of you on a stone. They are all delicious. D.W. WHITAKERS MEATS: Best chicken at the market IMO. Kaufmann's is very good as well. I go to DW when I need chicken. K&K BAKERY: This place makes the best apple fritter I've ever had. KATE'S FISH: My go to for seafood. Anything seafood. Classic Seafood stand is my next go to if Kate's is out of something or closed. BAKERY: Take your pick. I think they are all outstanding. This morning I bought a cake from Cake Royale. ORALE: The Mexican food go to. All of their chips and salsa are outstanding. The tamales make for a great weeknight meal with some refried beans and Mexican rice. Their flour tortillas transform normal taco or fajitas into something special. PIEROGI PALACE: They sell dozens of types of pierogies and they are all frozen. I like that. I can take them home and defrost to eat. Or toss them in the freezer for another time. They make the best pierogis in CLE IMO OHIO CITY PASTA: Best pasta in CLE IMO MEDITERRANEAN IMPORTED FOODS: I really like the deli here. Amazing selection of imported meats and cheeses. I didn't realize how often and how many places I visit when I go the market! It's that good! This list isn't entirely inclusive of where I go. These are the places I visit most often. Reason I don't have any pork or beef recommendations is I buy my pork and beef from a local farm. I highly recommend visiting early if you can on weekends. It opens at 7 and I always shoot for arrival by 7:30-8:30. I arrived this morning at 8:30 and the parking lot was more than half full. But that is with the other lot still closed. So it wasn't as busy yet inside. After 10 or 11 it gets really crowded. And slow to move around. Bring your own bags if you can. Some people will bring a cart on wheels to put their stuff. That's fine when it's not busy. Early morning or during the week. I notice that early mornings you will be with mainly locals. They are there to visit and buy from specific vendors. They know what they want and get in and out. As the day goes on it becomes more touristy. With people looking around like they do in Times Square when they have never been there before. And taking pictures. Last tip: if you get something to eat walk up the steps by Dohar to the mezzanine for a seat and great view.
