I called to make an appt after a referral from my PCP for my 17 yo son who will be 18 in 4 months who has pancytopenia with symptoms. I asked Wendy the scheduler for an appt this week after telling her what was wrong with him, she stated "that is not that serious, it will likely be 1-2 weeks". I didn't know a scheduler was a doctor and her words were not what a scared mother needed to hear. The next issue is that my son is still a minor and is 4 months away from being 18. Wendy called me back stating she found Dr. Patsiorik who was willing to see him as a minor and her next appt was in 9 days, I accepted the appt. I called my PCP asking if they could call Ironwood and help me get him in sooner and also left a message back with Wendy at Ironwood seeing if I could go to any office in the valley and possibly get an earlier appt. Wendy called me back to let me know I had the earliest appt available and I could have my PCP fax labs and notes for urgent referral and dr would review if he needed to be seen sooner. The next thing you know I receive a message from Wendy stating Dr is now not comfortable seeing my son since I was asking for an earlier appt date and feeling it was more urgent and that she cancelled my appt and my son needs to find a pediatric hematologist. You have got to be kidding me!!!!! I called my PCP whose medical asst couldn't believe it and called Ironwood Cancer Center herself and they said they didn't have an issue seeing someone who was so close to 18. After spending 8 hours on the phone back and forth I was left to find another hematologist at the end of the day. This was an awful experience as a mother scared and worried about her teenage son and wanting to find out what is wrong. Wendy needs to find a computer job that doesn't deal with people and those needing a cancer center. I never even made it in to see a physician and at this point I don't want to.
