| - I love Halloween. It's my favorite time of the year. I have gone to Scarowinds for the past three years running and annually they have changes to their haunted mazes and open spaces. Some good and some bad.
A quick description for those who've never been; this is a bunch of haunted mazes and a few haunted open spaces throughout the entire park. The mazes are the main attraction and are completely enclosed in a building. Once you enter a maze you cannot turn back around and exit, you're in it until the end. There are long lines for these.
The open spaces are areas of the park they dress up where you walk through while they try to scare you. There are no lines for these as they're just dressed up walkways. You can avoid these altogether by taking the alternate "scare free" path around the haunted open area (which just defeats the purpose of going to Scarowinds altogether).
Throughout the park they have random people in costume scaring the bejesus outta prepubescent girls and girlyboys. The chainsaw guy is one of my favorites, he lurks around sitting in a bench and waits for a large group, then he thrusts at them chainsaw going at a full run. I've seen kids run practically outside of the park
The noteworthy mazes include:
The Last Laff 3D - Psycho clows (à la Killer Klowns from Outer Space) in an awesome maze with a circus theme. For a buck you can get the 3D glasses and fully experience the 3D paint and effects (If you're really cheap like us, save the glasses for next year). This maze comes complete with a mirror maze.
The Asylum - This one is pretty freakin' spooky! This one has actually truly startled me at times. The effects and the "actors" in this one are superb and creepy as all-hell. This one completes the scene with a weird rubber tunnel that gives you the feeling of being completely trapped (if you're claustrophobic avoid this one!) and some creepy looking girl who always follows you around.
The Slaughterhouse - Disturbing... disturbing... Disturbing... Chainsaws galore!
There are others but these are the ones truly worth going for.
In my opinion, this year they had a massive foul up by getting rid of The Slaughterhouse and replacing it with Fury. That was just LAME! Fury apparently has to do with some sort of evil corporation trying to create superhumans gone array... this is possibly one of the worst mazes yet (it even beats that crappy Area51 maze they had a couple of years back).
Of the haunted areas only Feeding Frenzy is worth mentioning because it is so loud music and strobes are so crazy it is pretty disorienting and disturbing. The other two... meh.
We took 5 kiew of our brood this year. Four of them, collectively known as "the little kids", are under 10 but were all begging us to go since last year, the other one is one of the teenagers who helps us keep everyone herded in. I am glad to report that only one of them, Girl 1 (my 9 year old daughter) broke down. Boy 3 and Girl 2 did fine and went inside several mazes while Boy 4 did ok but refused to go in any of the mazes or open areas.
Eventually we had to break up our group into three smaller factions, Me with Girl 2 who was the one who wanted to hit all the haunted mazes, Tilmon (AKA Boy 2) took Boy 4 (who is the littlest) with him to walk around the "scare free" zones because he refused to go anywhere. Becky took Boy 3 and Girl 1 to the roller coasters because Girl 1 refused to go anywhere that wasn't away form the monsters. All in all an average afternoon for us!
As per usual for Carowinds/Cedar Fair, their food is atrocious and insanely expensive but at least the rides are open... with extremely long lines. So, I say, skip the rides and try to hit all the haunted mazes.
