  • I'm a born-and-raised Calgarian, and this year was the first year I ever attended Zoolights. Zoolights is an event that lasts a couple of months in the winter where they decorate the entire zoo in Christmas lights. It's spectacular to see and presents many great opportunities for a photographer like myself to experiment with playing with light, bokeh, and other abstract techniques. There's usually activities for the kids, ice carving, carolers, lots of hot chocolate, fire pits scattered all over the park where you can huddle and warm up, and on New Year's Eve, there's fireworks around 8 or 9 p.m. as well, making it a great destination for the family, while still allowing the parents time to enjoy the rest of the evening later on. Even though traditional zoo hours end at 5 p.m., during Zoolights, everything is open until 9 p.m., including the cafeteria, which is a good thing if you missed out on dinner. However, just like during normal operation, nothing ever stops you from bringing your own food and drink as well, which can help you save money. If you have a Discovery Passport, then admission is included. Otherwise, you have to pay admission (even those that hold an Annual Pass). If you're the type of person that loves checking out Christmas displays and loves to drive to Airdrie to check out their Festival of Lights, Zoolights is definitely something you'd be interested in checking out. And if you've never been, you should go at least once. It's quite specular and costs less than admission to the movies.
