  • Canteen: Two-star restaurant prices for fast-food restaurant quality and worker engagement. Except for a perky Caucasian brunette and an overly eager and enthusiastic East Indian man, the majority of the staff appear to be brain-dead. I've given Loblaws' "kitchen-fresh experience" more than a dozen legitimate tries over the past two months. It's sloppy at best: Call me Stupid! The choking-dry chicken and arid vegetable sides are consistently alarming due to overexposure in the warming plates -- the arrogance and nonchalance of the serving staff who prepare these platters defies all common sense. While the beef tenderloin is delicious, it hardly seems worth the $20 (with the two "approximated" portions of arid veggies, with a bottle of PC water) to eat in a high-traffic cafeteria with a team of cleaning staff whose duties appear to be mostly ceremonial (I have yet to understand the role of the swarthy South American man that hovers over all the staff when he's not otherwise deeply engaged in conversation in foreign tongue) and the constant sound of the "TTC chimes" if you should have the misfortune of selecting a seat located near ACE Bakery. The Canteen burgers are stellar and cooked to outdoor barbecue perfection! The sole stuffed with crab is passable. To their credit, the meat lasagna is almost as good as "Mamma Giordano's". Sadly and unjustifiably, the overpriced mac and cheese is a big waste of eight bucks: chalky-dry, flavorless, and almost cheese-less, you'd be better off to buy the frozen PC entree version. In addition to the washed-up wannabe retired figure-skater with an attitude at checkout, the staff don't seem to have the ability to exercise a single brain-cell. Unless you make a habit of "supervising" them by watching every transaction, chances are you'll be cheated by their carelessness. They don't care and they "scan" thoughtlessly. Nevertheless, I am quite certain that the Loblaws is aware that it's strictly about the convenience of "picking something up after work" for dinner if your live nearby. Good for Galen!!
