| - PNC Park is right up there with AT&T Park in San Francisco as one of my favorite MLB parks. There are similarities in both stadiums and the thing that seems to win me over is that they are located right on the water. Whoever thought to build baseball parks surrounded by water is a smart person, lol.
What really gets me about PNC Park is they have these yellow bridges (team colors of the Pirates and Steelers) overlooking the Allegheny River of the famous "3 Rivers" connecting downtown Pittsburgh to the ballpark. While you're at the stadium it's worthwhile to walk around the outfield area and cross a bridge. It's a pretty photogenic area and in general, just a real cool spot linking the city of Pittsburgh to their beloved sports teams. Also to mention, just down the street from PNC Park is Heinz Field, home of the NFL Steelers.
Another nice feature about the ballpark is the view from home plate. It offers fantastic scenery of the Pittsburgh city skyline. So along with these colorful yellow bridges hovering over the Allegheny River and the picturesque skyline in the distance, PNC Park is ideally situated for fans of baseball.
I must say being at my first game, there's something about the design of PNC Park that's pretty significant. It's got that homely feel to it. Like a design and atmosphere of a minor league game, but at the major league level. The seats hover right over the field and you feel like you're part of the action. It seats under 40,000 people and that lends to the intimacy of the whole park.
Going to the park for a 1pm game in the summer time, it was extraordinarily hot and for the first hour of the game I was sitting in the sun with no shade. That would be my only drawback about the stadium, but as the game went along, shade began covering the field and it was much more pleasant.
I'd also like to mention the design of the right field seats. It's a great spot to watch the game. As I was walking around, I noticed this area is like having a whole little section to yourself and the seats are eye level with the game. Although I sat down the first base line, I was intrigued by the right field stands and would certainly buy a ticket there next time I visit the park.
Overall I'd give PNC Park 5 stars as a MLB stadium. There were so many great features about the park...most noticeably the ideal location. I'd recommend to all baseball fans to come here for a Pirates game.
