| - To be completely honest, I wavered a bit with this review's rating. I would like to visit Fromagination a few more times to form an accurate opinion, but this review reflects my first impression only.
There are quite a few things I admired and found lacking from visiting the shop on a Farmer's Market Saturday, but I think that overall Fromagination is definitely worth a visit. It is basically a Madison landmark at this point, no?
Walking in at mid-day during one of the busiest days, the store was expectedly crowded. However, that didn't prevent the employees from being attentive and trying to offer assistance to the many customers milling about the cheese cases.
The knowledgeable staff is just one of the shop's perks: the store features a small, but carefully curated selection cheese, meat, and other accompaniments. If you are hosting a party and need cheese plate or charcuterie advice, this is a great place to go. Also, a good gift destination.
The two things I didn't love: the cheese selection was much smaller than I expected. This is a also a benefit, because it means that all of the cheese sold is intentionally chosen and guaranteed to be good. However, with so many amazing cheeses in Wisconsin, I was disappointed that the selection here was so limited. However, there are other local stores like the co-op that fill this need. The main draw od Fromagination is curation and expertise, not selection.
The second issue is that the prices are pretty high, but I think, considering product quality, they are justifiably so.
Anyway, definitely worth a stop.
