  • This little store has a larger selection of Indian staples than all of the Indian supermarkets on Chicago's Devon Street combined. That includes numerous types of legumes, spices, mixes, flours, drinks, fresh veggies, and sauces. I couldn't believe the selection. Lakshmi's has a real bounty of ingredients and prepared foods and everything in between. The place is filled to the rafters, yet it's also clean, tidy, and gives the impression that the stock is replenished frequently. It's warm and fragrant inside, making for a very pleasant shopping trip on a cold winter's day. It's great to have an independent market nearby when the only other option for miles around are chain supermarkets. The prices at Lakshmi are quite reasonable, especially compared to what some of the exact same products are being sold for at the big box stores. Low prices are also a great incentive for trying new products and experimenting in the kitchen. I may have also just picked up the freshest bunch of cilantro I've ever encountered in NEO. This store really gives new life to the possibility of making vegetarian dishes which are interesting and delicious. Besides Indian products, there is a pretty decent selection of foods from east/southeast Asia and the Middle East. I imagine that the owner, whom I'm told is himself a talented cook, has good relationships with some really great importers. Ask him for cooking advice. He has had the store for 15 years and he is very helpful in pairing beans and spices. The other staff are very nice too. The place was quite busy at 5:00 pm on a weekday. I recommend trying the fresh desserts in the fridge by the register. Some are similar to what you might find in restaurants, but these are much more flavorful and delicious. As far as Indian ingredients go, I bet that if something has made its way to the North American continent, then you can find it at Lakshmi's.
