| - I show up on a Thursday night around 10:15pm for reverse happy hour and I'm very excited to use my $20 half birthday certificate. This isn't my first visit to Ra Sushi, but it is my first time at the Tempe location on Mill Ave. The place is busy, and the music is loud. The pretty hostess quickly seated me at the Sushi bar, as per my request, and said my server (Monique) would be with me shortly. The man behind the sushi bar was very friendly and asked me if I needed a paper order menu. I asked for one and he told another staff member walking away if he wouldn't mind bringing one for me while I wait. The order menu never came, but Monique eventually did. She informed me that my $20 certificate was not valid on happy hour prices (since when?) and that I would pay full price (so much for waiting for reverse happy hour). I was ok with that considering the restaurant doesn't have to do anything for me and I am still very grateful for the certificate. I order 1 Viva Las Vegas Roll, 1 Crunchy Calamari Roll, and 1 Smoked Salmon Nigiri with a water. About 10 minutes go by and the sushi chef hands me my order over the counter. The Las Vegas roll was phenomenal, absolutely delicious and very filling; I highly recommend. My crunchy calamari roll was very good, and the sweet eel sauce is a nice touch. The calamari prawns on the last two pieces were huge, and very tasty. Now onto the nigiri, a personal favorite. I saved this dish for last because I want a clean palette, lots of wasabi, and two nigiri pieces to finish with. Boy was I disappointed! The Salmon was super salty, even without Soy sauce. These two small pieces of fish alone go for almost half the price of a regular roll, so I was expecting great things. I ate both, as not to waste, but dang it was saltier than Lay's potato chips and I'm not exaggerating. I don't know where my server went during this entire time, but I'm in need of another glass of water and Monique is nowhere to be found. I've eaten two rolls, and some nigiri on one glass of water! Not once did she come over to check on refills, ask if the food was good, offer to sell me more, etc. She was totally focused on other parties and because I was alone and already started eating, I got thrown on the backburner. After sitting at the sushi bar for sometime waiting for my bill, and a refill, another staff member walks by and offers to refill my glass. I thank her, and start to wonder where MY server went. Another 10 min. go by and I still need my bill. It's a little after 11pm and I want to leave. Finally my server brings my bill after flagging her down and she clears the dirty dishes I've had to stare at for some time. I still left a 15% tip on what the bill WOULD have cost if my certificate was not applied. I've worked in the food industry and I didn't like it and my heart goes out to those who work it so I cut her a break considering she never actually waited me. On my way out I ask for a toothpick- they don't have any. I said ok, how about a piece of candy for my fish breath? Nothing. I left full, but empty handed. Oh well.
