  • I had a very negative experience with Handybook and felt an obligation to share it so that others don't have to go through the hassle I did. I booked a 4 hour cleaning with Handybook, which is typically how long it has taken others to clean our townhouse as well as the time recommended on the handybook site based on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. 30 minutes before the appointment time on the day of the cleaning I received a call from the assigned cleaning lady, and she asked me for the address and how she could get to our place using the TTC. At this point I realized she was going to be late given that I am outside the city and she was commuting from the downtown core. I gave her directions. 15 minutes past the appointment time I received another call from her this time sounding upset and asking me to give directions to the cab driver this time, which I did when she passed him the phone. She finally arrived 30 minutes late, with no apology, and seemingly upset with me because she had to take a taxi. I started to tell her the basics about the house (# of rooms, washrooms, etc) and she blunty replied to me "I will do 4 hours". At this point I knew this was not going to go well. I asked her to start at the top floor and work her way down. The top floor has our bedrooms, the second floor the kitchen and family room, and the lower floor a den and laundry room. First of all, she told me that her vacuum (the Handybook vacuum) could not work(?!?) on our carpets and I would need to bring her ours. So I did. Then I left her to work away upstairs for about an hour or two while I did some laundry downstairs. I then needed to pick up some groceries and let her know I'd be back in about 1 or so, she was still working on the upper level - well into the allotted cleaning time. I came back 1.5 hours later and she was still upstairs in the bedrooms cleaning. She was still on the upper level. 3.5 hours had passed and she had only cleaned 2 bedrooms and one small washroom. I should mention we have not lived in this house long so we basically just have a bed and an end table in each room - not much to dust! When I asked her why she hadn't moved on to the main floor yet, she simply replied that she was doing a deep cleaning and cleaned all of the baseboards... she still was not done the top floor yet! I wanted her out but let her finish the last 30 minutes, during which she finally finished the bathroom and then left. 4 hours later, and I did not get my floors mopped, she didn't even make it to my kitchen, family room, living room, office etc etc... she only managed to clean 3 bedrooms and the bathroom, and did a horrible job at that. When I contacted Handybook they apologized profusely and told me that she should have been able to do our whole house and that this is not typical of their service. The woman on the line (Claudia) seemed quite nice and offered to have someone come the following week to clean the place so they could make up for it. I asked that she ensure it is someone with better reviews so that I wouldn't have a similar situation. Claudia confirmed a day and time with me. She even called me a few hours later to change the time as she wanted to ensure I got the best possible person and the appointment was rebooked, confirmed by phone and email. The day of the rescheduled appointment, I left work to be able to get home to meet the person at the scheduled time but this time no one even showed up!! I called in and they apologized again saying this time they weren't able to confirm someone and therefore had to cancel. I asked why wasn't even notified of the cancellation and they couldn't offer me any explanation. At this point I asked for a refund. Claudia said she would ensure I would receive one as well as a call back from a manager. This was 1.5 weeks ago and I have not heard from anyone nor have I received my refund.... very unprofessional company.
