| - Having back surgery is a major decision. Everyone hears the horror stories, either they are worse or needed additional procedures. I swore I would never have back surgery unless it affected my quality of life. That is exactly what happened. I was a runner, and my partner was a 100-pound rescue dog. But I had gotten to the point where walking was very difficult (the running had ended), my job was nearly impossible.
It involved flying every week. I work as a consultant for small Biotech companies. I am also a Pharmacist. My job requires researching, assessing and interviewing physicians and deciding if they can perform the clinical trial for the company. Because of my connections, I could have had my back surgery performed anywhere in the US. I decided to have the surgery in Nevada- in case I had complications. I researched all the Spine Neurosurgeons in the area, and decided to go with was Yevgeniy Khavkin. I reviewed all his credentials carefully, and his training. I had moved here from Chicago in 2011. Dr. Khavkin attended a prestigious medical school in Chicago, was at John Hopkins in Maryland, then back to Chicago and appointed Director of Neurosurgery at Northwestern University. I Have connections at these institutions.
I met with him in August 2016. After reading my MRI- He told me I needed this procedure right away, and was amazed I could even walk, let alone fly all over the US for my job. Since my daughter was getting married back East- I put the surgery off until 5 days after her wedding I When Dr. Khavkin operated (he works with a great team), my back was much worse than they thought. The procedure was 4 hours instead of 2 hours. I had to have L3-L5 fused, not just L4-L5. I was not only walking again (without the foot drop), but walking my 100-pound dog down to the park where we used to run (within 6 weeks after procedure). All the people from the dog park that saw me barely able to walk before the surgery and now with my dog post-surgery were completely amazed and asked who performed the procedure. I live in Henderson- near Anthem, and although he is located on Town Center Drive, the drive and outcome were well worth it. I cannot speak highly enough about Dr. Khavkin. I just saw him for my 6-month check-up- and thanked him for giving me my life back. (I still fly around for my job and do not set off alarms at the airport with the hardware in my back)
