  • This is the pawn shop that my boyfriend works at! I know this makes me a biased source of information, but I will do my best to tell you both the good and the bad with as much of my head and as little of my heart as possible. I should also probably tell you that I work at a different pawn shop on the weekends, and have worked there full-time off and on for the last 4 years - I know my stuff! Amigo Pawn is a small mom-and-pop operation, (it's actually a mother-and-son operation, but that's beside the point), that still manages to wind up with great items at prices that are beyond fair. Even though the pawn shop that I work at is a corporate chain that receives a lot more business, (and, thusly, a lot more items for sale), Amigo Pawn still ends up with awesome stuff on the sales floor that makes me drool. For instance, just this week, an HP computer came out for sale... with a dual core processor clocking at about 2.6 ghz, 6 GB of RAM, a 640 GB hard drive and a 26" HDMI LCD monitor. It sold for $550. If you know anything about computers, you will know that the monitor itself sells for that much. This broke my heart! I wanted it so bad...but someone else was faster. Such is the cutthroat world of shopping at the pawn shop. Amigo Pawn's stock on hand isn't limited to computers. They have TVs, keyboards, guitars, violins, brass instruments, generators, all manner of power tools, a huge selection of odd loose tools, game systems, digital and film cameras, DVDS, DVD box sets, CDs, gold jewelry, and guns. The "loose tools" mention should be particularly interesting to you, because many pawn shops no longer accept them into pawn or offer them for sale - the pawn shop I work for certainly doesn't! They also occasionally have rims for your car, if that's your thing. All of these items are priced leagues below retail value. The exterior of Amigo Pawn might make it look a little rough. However, look a little closer. The outside of the pawn shop is clean, with many lit signs and designs professionally painted on the windows. The building itself is very old, and the guys that work there are just doing the best they can with what they have. Don't be afraid to stop in on your way out of the Middle Eastern Bakery. All of the guys that work there are smart, friendly, and knowledgeable about both the selling and loaning aspects of being a pawnbroker. They will treat you with great courtesy and respect, as long as you offer the same. As Amigo Pawn sells guns, the guys working there do carry firearms. Please don't let this discourage you from doing business there - they wear the guns as a precaution to keep you safe. As far as getting a loan goes, they are much faster at assessing your merchandise and completing the loan process than my store. Like I said, they are very knowledgeable about almost any merchandise you might choose to bring in. Out of the mom-and-pop shops, they pay the most for gold and, despite their tough-guy appearances, they really do want to help you out. If you have a problem or encounter a tight spot with your bills, explain the situation to them candidly and honestly and I can assure you that they will do their best to assist you in a way that allows you to keep your dignity...and your lights on, too. Whether you're a pawn shop novice or an old hand in the business, stop in and see for yourself - you might just make a few amigos. :)
