| - Loblaws City Market is Superstore on Steroids.
I love Superstore but I didn't know what to expect at City Market. So, I decided to go to the 8:00 am grand opening with an open mind. They gave away gift cards and tote bags and had plenty of yummy samples.
The biggest thing you'll notice right away is the cleanliness (bet they're trying to get close to Godliness?!). Gone are the funky smells and dirty floors. I love how the store is big, modern and, bright. The layout is similar to Sobeys and aisles are a bit tight but City Market makes up for that with smaller carts. Note: this is not a health food, organic store. It is a souped up version of Superstore.
City Market's main sell is their PC Blue Menu and PC brands; there is barely any yellow No Name packaging to sore the eyes. Beware, the price of most items are $2 more than Superstore although an avid PC points collector can offset that with their app and in store deals.
The "Sushi by T&T" bar, salads and pizza departments offered a fresh selection of ready-to-eat noms. The pastries in the patisserie display cases looked decadent. The deli meats were 10 notches above the standard cold cuts you'd get at your regular run of the mill Superstore. The most impressive departments were the meats and seafood.
The seafood was mega fresh; the eyes on the salmon were bright and looked alive. They had wide a selection of fish filets, and shellfish. The meats department offers dry aged steak, high quality meats and artisan sausages. I love the idea of being able to buy fresh fish and dry aged steak so close to home.
The bakery had gourmet cookies by the gram (similar to Whole Foods), and a bread slicer to customize the thickness of your slices.
The aisles and the rest of the store was ordinary with some local options. They had Grizzly Paw pop, Fiasco Gelato, and McKay's ice cream.
Overall, Loblaws did a great job with evolving their name and marketing their PC brands into upscale grocery store. However, as you pass the deli, bakery, meats and seafood and walk deeper into the aisles, you can't help but tell yourself you can get these items cheaper at their parent store. It was lipstick on a pig.
Loblaws City Market is a great addition to the NW community. The place is fun for the kids to learn and explore great food options beyond the grey dismal ambience of Superstore. Stick to the deli, bakery, meats and seafood departments and you won't be disappointed. Finally, don't forget to marvel at the cheese wall, and dry aged steak fridge. Just remember to wipe the drool off the side of your mouth ;)
