The plays are so so. The new venue is not near anything which means it's far for most people to get to. The stage is cramped to the point that I am amazed that they can even make it work. The first time I visited this location, I incorrectly assumed it was a temporary one. According to their website, they moved here for more space. Maybe they have more space for the theatre company but the theatre itself is far smaller than the one at the Pumphouse location. The whole building just doesnt work for a theatre experience. The idea of not allowing you to reenter even if you go to the washroom, ironically, makes this the only theatre in Calgary that is not child friendly. If you are reading this, you probably have kids so you know that there is a good chance that they will need to go even if you ask them 40 times before the play. I have twins so multiply that probability by 2. All other theatres allow late seating. I drove across town with two 3-year olds who were very excited to see a play. I had to listen to them cry for ten minutes after a very giddy young lady told us that we couldn't go in. I'm not exaggerating. She was thrilled to deny someone entry. She also appeared thrilled to inform me that I would not be able to exchange my tickets to see one of the other shows and just kept pushing their printed policy into my hand. My girls typically like the shows but it's not worth the half hour drive only to be denied entry if late or if one of my two kids needs a bathroom break. The reason given for no late entry or re - entry policy was that the entrance to the theatre is on the stage. That tells you how small the venue is and how poorly this whole new location venture was planned. Honestly, you have to wonder why a theatre for children is the least willing venue in Calgary to make accommodations for something as basic as a bathroom break. As an alternative, The Children's Feastival offers some amazing plays for little ones of all ages. For a true and rounded theatre experience with your child, Alberta Theatre Projects always has a great play for kids around Christmas time. For the rest of the year, your money will be better spent on major productions. P.s. All of these will let you go to the bathroom and still see the rest of the play. I really liked the Pumphouse location and productions. New venue very pale in comparison. Not likely going back.
