| - I hate to admit this because I fear the stone throwing that will occur, but I'm just not a fan of Monty's food. Madisonites love this diner and I certainly understand its charm. Its interior is quaintly decorated with very much a 50s diner feel. There's a pie and cake display case up front. They're always popular for brunch on the weekends. Service is friendly and this is a great neighborhood spot.
BUT, I've yet to have anything from Monty's that I like. I've been there many many times, for brunch, for lunch, and for dinner, and each time, I've been disappointed in the food. I really want to like this place, but I seem to be unable to find a dish on the menu that keeps me coming back.
My most recent visit was with a friend from out of town. I ordered their pozole which was an item I hadn't seen before on their menu and it sounded intriguing. But when it came out, I was disappointed. I found the chunks of pork a bit tough, the dish heavy on the hominy and the dish itself lacking in flavor. It felt one noted. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't for me. I was really hoping that this would be the dish I'd be excited to come back to Monty's for but I came away disappointed.
I ate less than half of my dish but I decided that the rest wasn't worth a takeout box. Unfortunately, this is how I often feel about Monty's food.
