| - We started our Saturday on a leisurely, lazy pace. We hit Starbucks to start off our day right with various beverages. I parked as we tried to figure out where we wanted to go. One of my friends needed to use the washroom.
After about forty minutes being undecided, I suggested that we have lunch. I had no problem taking a recommendation from my friend's friend. We headed to Midwood Smokehouse.
Getting there was a bit tricky. I missed the odd turn and had to reroute. It's in a plaza that is ridiculously busy. However, when I was closer to the smokehouse, parking was a breeze.
We were immediately seated in a booth. One of my friends had no hesitation in ordering the well-fed combo platter with me. It consists of Carolina chopped pork, beef brisket, St. Louis style pork ribs, hickory smoked sausage, hushpuppies, and mac and cheese.
My other friend does not eat pork. She ordered the barbequed chicken, with onions, hushpuppies, coleslaw, and veggies.
I also got a Diet Coke. You get unlimited refills. I got three drinks in total and got down to 2.5 glasses.
As far as barbeque goes, this place is amazing! The smoked sausage has cheese with some kick to it. It was awesome! The ribs fell off the bone and were so flavourful. My friend and I were nodding in agreement that they were the best ribs that we have ever had. The beef brisket was equally as tender and flavourful.
My friend knew that I have a weakness for mac and cheese. I got more of it. She was so generous. It was perfect.
Before coming to North Carolina, I was doing research on what foods are local to the state. I didn't get much information on it. I learned far more at this restaurant. It offers two types of barbeque sauce: a tomato-based one and a Carolina vinegar-based one. I loved the latter more. It was delicious.
This place also serves hushpuppies. They are deep-fried cornmeal goodness that is a Carolina thing. It tends to accompany barbeque. As a cornmeal lover, the huspuppies were so good and highly addictive!
Even though we were all pretty stuffed, we kicked it up a notch on the food coma scale and shared the chocolate cake. It was incredible! The crunchy chocolate crumble on top was unexpected and worked nicely with the moist, rich chocolate cake. Such a wonderful surprise!
Our server was wonderful. He moved to the States from Spain and was wonderful to chat with. He was attentive to our needs. This place is lucky to have him as an employee.
If you want delicious barbeque with great service, come here. You will not be disappointed.
