  • Butter and salt galore! If you like everything to taste like butter and salt, come here, come here, come here. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and I tried two different white wines. The local Riesling was better than the expensive French blend recommended by the server and was also the only local white on the menu--surprising for a place that emphasizes using local. The cheese plate was decent but the cheeses didn't have a lot of diversity to them and there wasn't enough bread for the amount of cheese. The fried oysters tasted like butter and salt so I loved it (and skipped the mayonnaise with the fancy caper remoulade title that was definitely mostly just mayonnaise) but the sweet potato fritters also tasted like salt and butter which was very disappointing since they smelled like delicious cinnamon. Those little balls came with a fabulous sweet butter that I even got extra to go. The Shishido peppers were nothing special, also tasting like butter and salt without a hint of any of the things it was supposed to taste like such as lime. We each liked our entrees and didn't like the other's entree. I had the duck confit porridge and love rice and leeks so that made my meal, although the butter and salt flavors were still unnecessarily strong. I took one bite of the cornbread and decided it also needed to be slathered in the sweet butter from the sweet potato fritters--a bit of honey would have been preferred option. Partner had the pot roast with the lima and black eyed beans. I found the piece of meat to be 1/3 fat rather than meat and wasn't a fan, but he liked the flavor, the beans, and the biscuit. Surprise: we both thought the dish could use less butter and salt flavor... His mac and cheese was great, though. I did the corn something dessert but when it came out it was just generic vanilla sherbet balls with three tiny pieces of dehydrated corn. Hmmm. The bill was upwards of $100 for two people and I think the only leftovers were two fritters and my cornbread. Given that we were made to sweat out on the porch where people walked by smoking and cars honking and we could clearly see open tables inside all night, I'm not considering this a good value fine dining experience. But it wasn't a disaster, either. Just... singularly focused on butter and salt.
