| - In summary: friendly staff, lively atmosphere, AMAZING pozole!
My visit was on a Saturday evening to celebrate a friend's birthday. We stopped at the bar right before the end of happy hour to grab a Sangria. It was an interesting drink, I'm sure I would've liked it more if I was fond of tequila. But, I had no trouble draining the pretty glass complemented with fresh citrus. Distrito's happy hour bartender gets a big extra star for asking the bar patrons (at 7:10pm) if we would like anything else from the happy hour menu before it closed. That's a very welcome change from most bars where happy hour tends to end at 6:45 instead of 7pm as posted.
For dinner we were seated in the dining room. Our server was helpful in going over the menu and recommended we each select 2 - 3 items because the plates were small "tapas style". Well, maybe if you are a 6ft 3 man you would need 3 items but I was completely stuffed after sharing the chips & salsa + shrimp (we only finished about 1/2) and the pozole.
OMG, let me tell you about the pozole.... SO FREAKIN GOOD! And did I mention amazing?! Perfect, succulent broth, amazing smoky/citrus-y heat, and I do not doubt there was a least a half of a pork belly in my bowl. Plus chorizo, fresh clams, hominy, chiles.... all swimming in unexpected harmony. Seriously, I am adding this dish to my profile - my last meal on earth would have to include Distrito's pozole.
After our second course, my friend wanted to order the barbacoa brisket to share for the finale. I managed to try one piece and I really liked the spicy sauce and the tenderness of the brisket. The tortillas were also obviously hand-made & fresh - delicious. My complaint is that the brisket was the only thing presented on the plate. There was no pico de gallo, no onions or cilantro, not even a flowered radish garnish. It really needed something.
Honestly though, the brisket could've come with a mexican herb & salsa garden and I still would've been thinking about that pozole....
