| - Decided to check this place out finally and was well worth the trip. Traveled from Ahwatukee, which nothing is really that far but for food sometimes its not worth it. Either way, after reading other yelpers reviews and seeing the pics for HH everyday from 2-5 figured a Saturday afternoon trip over after some shopping sounded like a plan. As most places, a strip mall restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside. Dark windows because of sun and a small patio but too hot to sit outside still. First impressions was good. Nothing spectacular for decor. Tables are well placed apart from each other, a few booths, a great use of chalkboard for specials, and a decent bar but not over stated. Wait to be seated, which wasn't crowded so about 2 minutes before a waiter came to seat us. Menu is simple which was where I got hopeful they actually specialize in what they cook instead of some of these places who have too many selections that all taste the same. We ordered 1 item from the starters and that was the fritters. They were pretty darn good. Didn't taste the oil, good corn bread mixture, could have incorporated actual corn to make them better but they served with a horseradish deep that was fantastic. From the HH menu, we selected: Hurricane shrimp, Crab Cake, Duck and Andouile gumbo, Seafood gumbo, Crawfish etouffee, BBQ pork sliders and LuLu's wings. I've posted pics as well but here's my take - Shrimp were fantastic, 6 shrimp swimming in their honey hot sauce with a scoop of white rice in the middle. My BF could have licked the plate. Sauce provided heat but not where you can't taste anything else. Crab Cake they slipped on the sage and it tasted like thanksgiving stuffing. Not much crab so I'd pass on that one when I go back. Gumbos were amazing! This is where they have concentrated their efforts and KUDO's to them! Seafood gumbo was a tad better than the duck/sausage from a fat content. They were both prepared perfectly. The Crawfish Etouffee was rich and flavorful and bursting with crawfish. A must try as well. LuLu's wings were deep fried and then sauced with the Hurricane sauce but not so great IMO. They turned out a bit too sweet for my tastes. But based on the consistency of the batter on the wing I bet their fried chicken is good. The wings were a nice size but again, too sweet for me. And last but not least the pork sliders. Great amount of pork on each slider, sauced with very well could have been the Hurricane sauce - was sweet, tangy not spicy BBQ flavor. Could taste a hint of smoked flavoring but definitely not smoked. Not a BBQ joint however so will let those slide.
My Rating - Gumbos: outstanding, Etouffee: outstanding, Hurricane Shrimp: Very Good; Fritters: Pretty good, CrabCake: Not so Good; Wings: Okay; BBQ Pork Sliders: Pass
Definately will be going back to try some other items on their menu! Hope this helped someone!
