| - I've been doing most of my shopping here for several months, and I'm mostly happy with the place.
In order to end on a positive note, I am going to start with what makes me think twice about going here for groceries.
- Produce section is not great. Since the fruits and veggies are not practically embalmed like they are at other grocery stores, the selection can look a bit wilted and small. Appearances aside, the produce usually tastes good. I would love it if SG sprung for a new produce case, as their current one is rusted and gross-looking.
- Store staff are not very knowledgeable. Usually, health food stores have someone around who can help with questions - - especially for the supplements area. No such person appears to exist at SG. I once saw another customer ask (what I know to be) a very simple question, and the cashier had to make calls to the back. A reference book had to be consulted.
- Cashier staff appears to be on edge a lot. They're never rude; their affect just seems stunted, restricted ...and now I know why...
- It has been nearly three years since Pablo E. wrote his eloquent review about Seven Grains, and, in it, he mentions that people in management "act like total douche bags." Well, things have not changed. Last week, I witnessed one of the cashiers being treated miserably with abandon over the walkie-talkie by one of the women in the office. The manager has a headset; the cashier does not. That means the manager's vitriol was essentially broadcasted for all within a 15-foot-radius to hear. I felt so bad for the cashier. I have been in her shoes before, and it sucks. And, of course, that trickles into the service provided by said (and all other) cashiers.
What keeps me going here:
- It's close
- It's local and independent
- It's usually not busy
- It has a good selection. There are only a couple things that I have to go to Mustard Seed for (a long drive)
- Its bulk food quality is very good. Try the raw, organic pecans!
- Meats are organic, local and well-priced. I highly recommend their boneless chicken thighs and ground chuck.
- My husband has to eat gluten-free. I don't have to, but I feel better when I do. SG has a good selection of gf foods.
- The women who work behind the deli/meat counter are very friendly and helpful.
I'm not quite ready to bring SG down to 3 stars, so consider this 3.5 stars. SG could be an extraordinary place, if it weren't for management screwing it up by not staffing well enough and by treating employees like crap.
