| - I've been looking forward to checking out the brunch at Coca Cafe for a long time, as many different friends in Pittsburgh have recommended it to me. Let's be honest, brunching is one of my favorite things to do...so of course I was eagerly anticipating the experience!
Coca Cafe is small, so be prepared to wait for your table. My friend and I came at around 1 PM on a Sunday and were told that our wait would be around 30 minutes for a table - honestly, not too bad at all. Coca is BYOB, so this gave us just enough time to hike up the hill to Arsenal Cider and grab a growler of pear cider before receiving the text that our table was ready.
My expectations were quite high coming into this brunch, as I had been told many times over that Coca has one of the best brunches in Pittsburgh. My overall experience was that I was impressed, but not as impressed as I had hoped I would be. The service was great; our waiter, Tristan, was attentive and friendly. We began with one of the starters: the buttermilk donut with lemon, blueberry, and blackberry icings and powdered sugar. Truthfully, this donut was the star of the show. The donut was crisp yet fluffy, and the icing combination was phenomenal. We gobbled it up immediately.
For the main course, I ordered the avocado omelette with applewood smoked bacon and house salsa. I was concerned about the jalapeƱo muenster as I don't love spicy things, so I subbed in the extra-aged beemster instead. My omelette was delicious. Was it the best omelette I've ever had? I wouldn't say so. However, it was quite tasty and quite large, so I was able to bring home leftovers. It also came with a side of grilled potatoes and a small fruit cup, which complimented it well.
I love that Coca changes their menu regularly, because this means that the next time I come I can be pleasantly surprised with something new. I'm not sure if it lived up to the hype for me on this first experience, but I can see myself coming back in the near future!
