  • Bought a used car from James Gutierrez last week. He's a pro, low key and knowledgeable. In his office, there's more trophies for employee of the month than I could count. Everything was good until they wanted to lo-ball me on my trade-in. This is a strategy used by most car dealers to make extra $ on your trade-in. They said carfax showed it had been in an accident. and if it had been in an accident then they "couldn't sell it on their lot". It had been in the smallest fender bender possible. After the usual "back and forth" between James and the guy in the back office, I okayed the deal, and then it was on to the finance guy, Ken. He got all the paperwork printed and then wanted to sell me an expensive extended warranty. When I declined, he stated "this car has sixteen computers" and any one of them could go out at any time! ...and then you'd be out all this money. (I'm sure he says that to everyone regardless of what the car model is!) I still declined. So then he showed me some website called Edmunds that supposedly tracks maint costs on cars. He swiveled his screen around so I could see it was true. It showed supposed annual repair costs of $5K for my car. I declined. So then he started whittling it down, finally stating that he'd taken all the "profit" out and that was the final number for 3yr/36K. That number looked reasonable and I said OK. So I can say that I am reasonably happy except for one more surprise: They put a permanent "freeway chevrolet" sticker on the back deck of the trunk. I don't mind the license plate frame advertising, but when they put a PERMANENT sticker on the trunk, I get upset.
