| - I had been using a different mechanic for the past few years who has always been extremely fair (cheap actually!) and never did anything that wasn't necessary. He even gave my wife and I free service depending on what what it was! He came recommended from a good friend who works at a local small business used car lot as a salesman/mechanic; they utilize Critchlow's services nearly daily because of the low cost, reliability, and awesome service. I have been dealing with so much that I didn't even realize my car was 3 months past inspection, so I instinctively take it to my usual place only to find that it will cost me nearly $1,400 to make my car legal. I already owe this guy a little money leftover from him changing my timing belt back in September of 2011, so the last thing I wanted to do was to rack up even more debt. Luckily he said no charge before I took off (he must not have realized that the emissions test was completed and the sticker was replaced! woo-hoo!). So I decided to take a trip down to the used car lot at which my good friend works to see what he thought I should do. I was pretty much ready to trade it in for a car without problems. He took a glance at the quote and stated that the place he had recommended before had started to go by the wayside in terms of pricing and other things. He recommended a second opinion at Critchlow's. So I made a $30 appointment to have my car looked over (safety check). Critchlow's determined the same things needed work (they also caught a burnt out headlight that the other place didn't); they also determined that the most expensive part could actually be REPAIRED instead of REPLACED; he recommended slightly used tires to save on cost until fall/winter comes along again; he also recommended that my friend do the brakes because he knew he could get the parts for me at his cost and only charge me about half the labor charge. So my nearly $1,400 bill and near-certain new debt of taking on a "new" used vehicle was magically changed to, get this, a total estimate of $200.00 + $85.00 for the cost for my friend to do what he could do (he quoted $230, so HUGE savings there!), plus inspection costs, and minus the $30 safety check fee because it goes towards the inspection cost. So all in all I'm looking to save roughly $1,100 on a $1,400 bill. That is, at least for folks like me, life-changing.
I've used Critchlow's once (they also came once when I called Triple A when I ran out of gas), and needless to say, my take is that they are extremely honest and good people who do everything they can to make their customers happy with the cost and the resultant work. They absolutely earn 5 stars in my book.
