| - I've had MacBooks for 10 years now and I haven't done much research on hardware ever since. This is because Apple products never give me a reason to consider replacing anything. However, my MacBook Pro (2012) had been a bit on the slow slide when it came to booting up. The "replace battery" message was popping up so I thought this would fix it. I went to the Apple Store in Biltmore to replace my iPhone screen and asked if they could replace my computer battery while I was there. They informed me that I needed to make a second appointment, which may take a week to get a time that would match my schedule. So I asked for a reference and the Genius Bar rep sent me to MacMedia.
This is where things get good. These guys replaced my battery in under 5 minutes and as I was waiting we had a conversation about my computer speed. I came to learn that my machine is actually an excellent machine, it just needed a new hard drive. Skeptical I thought maybe this was some sort of pitch. But then I remembered that Steve Jobs was always one to go with new technology, hence the flash memory on the newer MacBook Pros, vs update old technology. During this conversation I learned about Solid State Drive (SSDs) and he gave me a quote for the purchase and installation. It seemed a bit high for my budget but when he put things into perspective it was a lot less than buying a new MacBook Pro and the speed would be comparable. In short, replacing my hard drive for the fraction of the cost of a new machine would make it operate at the same capacity as buying new. So I did some research and found cheaper prices on the internet and instructions on installation. When I spoke the MacMedia rep about this, he was honest and said I'm always going to get a better deal online than a computer repair shop in Scottsdale. I asked him about self installation as I had experience installing HDs on late 90s/early 2000s PCs when I was in high school. He told me that if I was able to do that, this would be far easier and he went so far as to tell me which SSD brand to buy as well as the necessary adapter, tools, and instructions on how to clone my existing HD onto the SSD.
Fast forward, I went home, ran the install, and I couldn't be happier. My MacBook Pro (2012) runs as fast as my brothers' 2015 Retina. I could not believe how such a simple fix would make the world of difference. Because of these guys I am using my computer every chance I get now and I couldn't be more thankful for that awesome piece of free advice. 10 stars if I could!
In short, these guys provide excellent service and are passionate about computers. While my purchase was rather small, if I needed something bigger that I couldn't do myself, this would be my first stop. Highly recommend them!
