  • It has taken a few years and moving away from Madison to make me a believer in the Old Fashioned. But I do really feel that this iconic tavern/supper club deserves all the hype that it gets and that it has redeemed itself after my average review of it a few years ago. First of all, I agree with Steve L. that the cheese curds can be massively greasy... but with that grease comes a ton of flavor. I've had cheese curds that are technically better--crispier, bigger curd, etc. but there's something about the ones at the Old Fashioned that are so addictive. That being said, I think that the Old Fashioned has a lot of items that they do well and cause less controversy. Their signature burger: a thick, local, medium-cooked beef patty on a toasted roll with bacon, cheese, grilled onions, and topped with a soft cooked fried egg can be mind-blowing when done right (I've ordered it a number of times and once or twice the meat was overcooked and made me very sad). Their fish frys are amazing, too, as well as the Wurst platter, featuring Fitchburg's Bavaria kitchen's sausages as well as some tasty pickles, sauerkraut, and buttery toast points. And, of course, their signature drink, the Old Fashioned made the Wisconsin way--with brandy--is a great drink to go with your meal. The Old Fashioned is kid-friendly, though it can be a little dark and loud for the kids. They have a kid's menu with tasty dishes (like the aforementioned macaroni and cheese from my first review), offer broccoli as a side for some dishes, and have regular and chocolate milk from Sassy Cow Creamery. Like so many other places in Madison, the Old Fashioned celebrates local products, but this place takes its Wisconsin pride to another level. In addition to using local meat and cheese in many of their items, as well as having many dishes that are Wisconsin favorites, they have over 100 (I believe around 150) Wisconsin beers on tap and in bottles. And we have never ordered a beer here that we haven't liked. I feel bad giving the Old Fashioned a so-so review a few years ago. But I've really come to appreciate the food and philosophy behind this place. It's usually very hard finding a seat at the Old Fashioned at dinnertime, even with its expansion a few years ago, which is great because this is truly an amazing establishment in Madison.
