| - Well, this is the place. Off the beaten path, just south of CenPho, serving family recipes since 1968. The food is to die for, it's the real deal.
I remember my mother discovering this place more than 30 years ago, introducing me to green chili for the first time. A nearby project has allowed me to stop by often lately.
Today I tried the 3 way burro which is loaded with red, green chile, signature beans and melty cheese shred. The piquant first bite of either end will set the tone. The handmade tortilla is thinner than most, but you don't seem to mind as the flavors burst on your tongue. Today it was red chili first. After 2-3 bites you can expect the other end to start leaking, so watch out! The beans are whole and add character and substance to the most excellent combination of flavor and tortilla snap.
The whole thing took only a few minutes to wolf down, wishing you had slowed down to savor it a bit longer.
At $5.25 a dozen, the handmade tortillas to go are a bit pricey, but they are big burrito size and have the feel and texture of rural south of the border. Hmmm? What to load them up with when home? Half dozens for $3.25
There are mex choices for anyone who likes good home cooking. Breakfast in the morning, lunch and dinner available all day except Monday. There are Burros, specialties, tacos, tamales, enchiladas, combination plates and some light items for the discerning kiddies. There's something for everyone. At the end, you'll find yourself licking your fingers and chops for more.
This unique place is not easy on the eyes. It's rough hewn, comfortable enough, stark seating and practical. I imagine they do a half a million $ in takeaway a year. Authentic food takes leaps over the ambiance.
You'll never know who you will see here. All walks of life know good food by history, word of mouth, not to mention the family element through the years.
Not a miss on any mex foodie list!
I'm going back for more!
