| - I went to Fox's with some buddies from work after hearing how great this place was. I was very excited to try out it, as I've heard about it for years as another great cigar bar in town.
First impression: There are two entrances, one to the sidewalk side of the building and one to the more central parking lot side. We entered through the sidewalk side.
Looking down the bar, the lines are excellent. Prominent to the left of the side entrance is a large humidor with a great selection. To the rear of the building is a large horseshoe style bar and a great selection of whiskeys and tap beers. To the right is plush leather seating and quite a few happy patrons. Throughout the room are televisions showing a plethora of sports teams. We chose to sit on the wire chairs of the patio where one can enjoy the sites of Scottsdale and people watch.
Compared with Magnums, the bar is much larger and seems a little bit more streamlined. The bar is nice, and the shelving is very similar in that it's quality wood.
Service: Service was great. I walked in and selected my cigar, a Montecristo, and went to the counter to pay for it. There they offered beverages and asked to reserve a card to open the tab. While that is a bit of a departure from my normal cigar bars, it's standard in pretty much any other bar where you're not a regular.
During the visit, periodically one of the staff will come by and ask you if you need anything, and they are happy to bring you whatever you want, beer, whisky (Their selection is good), a mixed beverage. Very helpful.
My only compliant that could be entered here is that on my second cigar selection I asked for help selecting a cigar that was very strong. I love leathery potent beasts. The staff was very helpful in coming up with several suggestions, but the one he pointed out with a stress on potent ended up being a little lackluster in the department. No fault on him, my taste buds may have been shocked by the Monte's tastiness.
Selection: It's a cigar joint. If I show up looking for a cigar, I expect a good selection. I wasn't upset at all with this location's selection. The large humidor hosted cigars for every level of customer, from the beginner to the grizzled aficionado.
The drink selection was also great, and when I asked what whiskey's they had, the staff member said, "We have three pages." As she produced a menu. While it was probably one and a half pages on normal paper, she was correct, it was almost four of their pages of whiskeys. (For the record the selection of Whiskey was fine!)
Notables: This location is great for people watching, as you are on the fringes of the party district of Scottsdale. The bar is neatly tucked away, so it's not a full party locale, but you will get great views of folks walking by, see the occasional bachelorette party, and the pedal carts trundle by.
So end note: Ultimately, would I suggest this place to a newcomer to Phoenix? Absolutely. Fox's is a bit out of my way, so it won't be a common occurrence that I darken the doorway, but when I'm travelling across town to pick someone up from the airport or just in the region, I will definitely be looking forward to my next visit here!
