I had someone from EZ Exteriors out for an estimate on some siding work. They looked it over, explained some siding material options and told me they'd be in touch with a dollar estimate. Two weeks later I still hadn't heard from them so I gave them a call (naive, I know. This was before I learned that in contracting language this means they aren't interested/aren't able to do the job). I was told that they the rep was waiting for something from the siding manufacturer (I'm not sure of the specifics of the excuse. Doesn't matter, in any case) and that he'd be in touch soon. I've since moved on but it's funny to note that it's going on 8 months and not a peep from them since, so it really was a brush-off move. I don't understand why they just didn't tell me that they couldn't/wouldn't do the job but message received, I guess.
So-- general lesson in finding a contractor: don't get estimates sequentially. That is, don't wait to get an actual estimate from one before you contact the next contractor to do an estimate. Call five or six (or more) at once and hope you get 2 or 3 actual estimates out of that. It'll save you a lot of time and aggravation and there are plenty of contractors out there.
