  • Roka Akor --- Please bring back Shin! Shin is the legendary sushi/Japanese cuisine chef who launched Roka Akor. He then open Shin Bay, which sadly closed it's doors several months ago. Shin is a former James Beard nominee. Although I still love the ambience of this restaurant, it lacks a little of the original panache that it had it when it first opened. Tonight I went with a guest and we started with the Hamachi yellowtail sashimi salad. The salad was amazing and had a very flavorful dressing. However, the actual cut of the yellow tail was poorly executed. Still tasty, but I am only rating it a 4/5. We also had the Hamachi yellowtail Serrano chili roll. It was a very flavorful "rice side out" style sushi roll. The small slice of jalapeƱo pepper encased in a creamy sauce added a very flavorful touch. Especially when you use soy sauce with a generous amount of wasabi mixed in. 5/5. We then moved on to the Bone Marrow gnocchi. This was recommended by the bartender who had already provided me a Yamazaki 12-year-old Whisky with a single rock. 5/5 in its own right. As far as the gnocchi, I felt as if there were two distinct flavor is battling each other. Not to get to dramatic, but I felt as if it was the freshly pulled sword of Excalibur battling with the hell fury sword of Damocles. My guest loved it -- I was not that thrilled. I'll leave that rating to be provided by the individual who tries it after me. Next, we had the Yuzo Miso marinated black cod with pickled onions. I absolutely loved this dish. Very flavorful, with an awesome presentation! It had a nice cream sauce with small pickled onions that helped to cleanse the palate. See my photo in order to enjoy it's full resplendent nature. 5/5. During this time I also ordered a Hibiki Japanese Harmony 12 year Whisky with a single rock to go with this dish. Absolutely perfect blending of Japanese Whisky with Japanese cuisine! 5/5. Next, we ordered the Soft-Shell Crab roll with kimchi and daikon. Unfortunately, we had to ask where the roll was 15 minutes later, and they informed us that they had forgotten to put in the order. We then canceled that order and moved straight to dessert. 0/5 for execution. However, the dessert helped make up for our momentary disappointment. We had the Pumpkin Profiteroles. It came with two small chocolates filled with a melted caramel. Absolutely fabulous! 5/5 Also, our bartender was extremely friendly and a complete professional. If it weren't for the missed order on the Soft-Shell crab roll, I would have awarded a five star rating. However, whenever I am denied anything with kimchi, I get a little bit cranky. Overall, this restaurant is a "must try" if you have never been there before!
