| - I recently moved to the area from Southern California and was told that this was a good place to go for vaccines, so I brought my American Staffordshire Terrier here to get her yearly vaccines. I arrived at 6:45am and waited until 8:35am to be called.
Upon being called, the vet tech informed me that my dogs training collar was bad. I told her that, unfortunately, my dog is not well behaved in public and the collar is only used for these kind of outings and then removed, which is why she had on her regular collar as well. She told me that I should be using a full body harness for pulling. Anyone with a dog that pulls knows that harnesses promote pulling. She also told me I could use a gentle leader. Now all it takes is a little research to see that "gentle" leaders are not so gentle. Unfortunately my dog's breed has a high pain tolerance and will pull so hard and so often that her nose blisters and bleeds. So yea I'm not using a gentle leader, thanks.
Moving on....
I am asked what kind of food she eats. I respond with Kirkland wet and dry food. The tech then informs me that there is a "good" Costco food and a "bad" Costco food. She tells me that dogs are not allowed to have food with corn or grain. I do understand that some dogs need grain-free foods due to allergies, however, 90% of dog food has some kind of grain. My dog's "bad" Costco food has rice and barley, but no corn, wheat, or animal-by-products. I did plenty of research to make sure that I was providing a high quality dog food that was also affordable for me.
Then the vet comes in and proceeds to tell me that my dog is overweight. My dog weighs 68 lbs and the recommended weight for her breed is 62-88 lbs. She has a waist and an abdomen tuck as dogs with healthy weights do. Maybe this vet is confused about how an American Staffordshire Terrier should look?
Anyways, the bottom line is, I'm here to get vaccines, so give the darn vaccines and stop lecturing me. I am well informed on how to take care of my dog. I imagine I am just being judged as some idiot with a "pit bull" who has nipples that sag a bit, so obviously I must breed them. NO! Wrong! What these people don't know about me is that my dog was rescued from Carson Animal Shelter in Carson, CA when she was pregnant. I fostered her AND her entire litter of puppies after they were born. The rescue that pulled her from the shelter found wonderful homes for her puppies and I adopted my dog after all her puppies were adopted. In addition to that, I have fostered a hospice dog who was terminally ill. I also fostered and then adopted a senior dog with cancer, arthritis, and thyroid disease. So yes, rude vaccine clinic, I know how to take care of my dogs and I also know that I would rather pay more money to go somewhere else where I am treated with respect than ever come here again.
