| - So, for once in my life I do NOT want to write a Yelp review. Like, I really really don't want to do it. Maybe I'll just stop here, delete what I've already written, pull up some Netflix and watch a movie instead. That sounds much more pleasant.
I have been avoiding this review like the plaque. Ever since I took my first sip of Platform beer, I knew I would hate every second of this. Why? Well, it's actually a pretty short story: I didn't like it. Now, it takes a lot for me to not like a beer. I love beer. I love stouts. I love porters. I love IPAs and I love hefeweizens. I love dark beers and light beers, cheap beers and expensive beers, but what I did not like, was this beer. The sour wit to be exact. I ordered it off a whim, too excited to pour over the menu and drink descriptions. Maybe that was my first mistake.
Now, I know a sour wit is an acquired taste, so I chalked up my not liking it to the fact that maybe the unusual sour characteristics were throwing me off. So I asked the person I had come with how their beer was, and much to my dismay they didn't like theirs either.
Ok, ok they are just having a bad night... right? I was so in love with the atmosphere of Platform I didn't want to admit to myself that maybe it wasn't everything I had dreamt it would be. The people were so fun and lively, and the space itself was open, spacious and just so damn cool. I felt so cool just by being there that the idea of giving them anything less than 5 stars would be borderline sacrilegious, so I avoided the situation all together and didn't write a review.
Well, last night I decided to give it another go. I rallied the troops and set out for Platform. I took my time this time, looking over the menu and weighing my options. I ended up ordering the Rock City while my 4 friends ordered various other Platform brews. One by one we took that first magical sip, full of promise and excitement, and one by one our faces grimaced in defeat. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, well you know the rest.
Don't get me wrong, this place is cool. Like, hip, trendy, "lets go somewhere where we can wear flannel in September and not be judged" kind of cool. So if you are looking for a new place to hangout and meet people, this is your spot. If you want a really good drink, maybe try somewhere else.
Naturally it's really hard for me to give places I really enjoy the atmosphere of low ratings, but the actual product itself was lacking enough to the point where I would feel like a liar if I gave them anymore than 3 stars. So, with much dismay I give Platform a very very generous 3 out of 5.
