  • Ranucci's BBQ & Grill opened a few months ago where the old Catawba Grill used to be. They offer pulled pork, pulled chicken, ribs and smoked sausages, as either plates, sandwiches or in bulk (oddly, they offer a "Texas Reuben" sandwich with smoked brisket, but brisket is not offered any other way) . On my first visit I had the pulled pork plate with fries and mac and cheese. The BBQ was really good - nice and smokey and tender, but not mushy (like other BBQ that sits around too long). The fries were fine - commercial, but crispy and nicely salted. The mac and cheese, however, was a big disappointment. Ranucci's uses shells instead of elbows, and my portion was kind of thin on the cheese sauce. It wasn't terrible, mind you, but compared to Midwood Smokehouse it's got a long way to go. I went a second time to get a pound of pulled pork to go. Again the meat was delicious, but instead of the Eastern North Carolina sauce I'd requested, I was given their house sauce. Their house sauce is tasty, but texture-wise is like a thinned out version of a commercial BBQ sauce (in other words, way too thick). Accidents happen, I guess, but given the strong feelings people have for BBQ and sauce, you'd think they'd try to get it right. I consider East Carolina sauce to be the One True BBQ SauceĀ™ and anything else is blasphemy. For a minute I was OUTRAGED that they'd given me the wrong sauce... but then I realized how silly it was. Prices aren't too bad ($10.99/pound for pulled pork to go, sandwiches with 1 side range from $5.99 to $7.49). They're also open decent hours and have Coke (not Pepsi) products.
