What's important to road bikers: smooth, even, clean surfaces from the Harvard entrance for a good ten miles until you get to Rockside. Then it's still even, but limestone. Maybe I'm a it guilty of babying my road bike, but at this point I continue onto the road and it's still a great route to go. Another three miles or so and (after a nice challenging hill) you can enter right onto Akron Hike Bike Trail. Great scenery and I actually complete a 45-mile loop this way continuing back up by Boston Miles. The hills are a real challege and you can really grab some speed. This is my favorite trail in NE Ohio hands town.
What's important to mountain bikers: enter at the Harvard, and after a quick couple miles, cross the canal and there are two levels of mountain biking trails: one half mile (beginner) the other two miles (intermediate). The two-miler is no joke. I'm more of a road biker and I thought I'd take my mountain bike out and master this thing. Wrong. I bit it right after going in and walked my bike a good 50% of the time. About a foot to the right of the trail there is a steep drop off, roots linger all over the trail and dips and curves challenge the ride. A great challenge - just know what you're in for.
What's important to runners: if you have any joint issues, the limestone is much more forgiving than than the pavement, so just park your bike or car at the Rockside entrance and you're set.
What important to everyone: There are restrooms, water fountains and picnic tables all along the trail. Out for the day? Pack some cash and grab lunch at several restaurants along or right across the way. They welcome the active and even post "come as you are" signs along the trail.
