| - I love browsing through stores like these. El Rancho excels in fresh prepackaged and freshly made foods. About half the section is devoted to their baked goods, hot foods, beverages, and butcher area. The prices at the hot foods section are very reasonable and they have filling breakfasts in the morning.
I was on a mission to get chilaquiles. They have three different price structures for them, $4.99, $5.99 and $6.99 with no explanation on the sign for the difference in price. At first I thought this meant small, medium and large size, but after saying I wanted a medium size chilaquiles to the person at the counter she seemed a little confused by my request but then asked if I wanted eggs or no eggs (Eggs for me of course!). I was rung up for $5.99 and now that I think about it I think it's cheapest for no egg, medium price for egg, and $6.99 maybe for meat?
It didn't take too long for them to make my order. I got it to go in case I couldn't finish. I opened up the box and it smelled delicious. There was a generous portion of bright red chile soaked chips, 2 over easy eggs, with rice and beans. The chips were crispy and thick which held up well with the red chile sauce. Some of the chips on the bottom were a bit mushy though. The eggs had nice runny center. The rice and beans were decent. For the price I paid I was satisfied for what I got. A lot of places I go to charge anywhere from $8-10 dollars for plain chilaquiles with egg and no meat which I don't understand because it's only chips with chile sauce and eggs; these are all really cheap ingredients so it's quite a markup!
I love the variety of food you can get at the freshly prepared section. They offered agua frescas, champurrado, ceviche, birria, pozole (Sold on the weekends only), carnitas, empanadas, and there were some workers making fresh tortillas while we were here in all sorts of flavors. I was excited to see very unique corn tortillas such as habenero, nopales, beet, as well as blue corn. They also had a lot of different masa for sale, including blue corn masa.
We browsed around afterwards and while the aisles are a bit narrow they pack in a lot of goods in the store. They had produce such as fresh banana leaves and pre-chopped nopales, and an extensive array of meat+ seafood in the butcher area.
Also, if you want a big @ss pinata this is the place to go. If I were a kid I'd want one of those for a birthday party! I mean, who wouldn't want a gigantic Donatello ninja turtle pinata to take out all your aggression on, or a towering poop emoji pinata (Hopefully fragrance free)?
