  • Picture me rooting for an airline, but Porter stole my heart today. I walked off the plane smiling. While I love to travel, I loathe and in fact dread the experience of flying -- depressing terminals, dirty planes, abysmal service, constant efforts to upsell, etc. Just when you think it can't get any worse, they find some reason to raise prices and downgrade quality. Domestic flights have become a colossal rip-off. It is literally cheaper for me to fly to Los Angeles than to Calgary, and I can't shake the feeling of being gouged. I don't know what magic economic formula Porter has discovered, but they seem to have managed to reconcile quality with profitability, because every part of my recent experience with them was delightful. Spotless, chic terminal with plenty of seating, free beverages, quick check-in, friendly, chipper staff, nice new planes, slick website, and reasonable prices -- not a thing to complain about. This sounds like a slogan, but *this* is how air travel should be. I travel to Ottawa fairly often and it's not quite cheap enough to be a viable alternative to VIA on a regular basis, especially since the airport in Ottawa is so far from the city. The five minute ferry ride in Toronto is also kind of weird -- hoping they have plans to address that strange break in the chain, though it's hardly their fault.
