| - I have often visited Toronto throughout my visits to Canada, but had gone to see family and was always so far from the St. Lawrence Market, I was never afforded the chance to saunter through their massive space.
I went on a trip and finally had a chance to explore parts of Toronto I'd never seen. This enormous market has everything from poultry, to baked goods, to cheeses galore. Everything you can think of and the most beautiful (seriously) produce you have ever seen is here. We sampled various sauces, salsas, and picked up everything from kitchen items to Sweet Potato Cookies that we polished off in between stalls. We picked up beautiful homemade candles to give as souvenirs (wouldn't you rather have a gorgeous bee's wax candle than a stupid key chain, anyway?) and chatted with people working the market. Everyone was pleasant and happy to be there and we spent a good chunk of the day there. If I hadn't been staying in a hotel with no fridge, I would have bought all the cheese I could find to take home and relish in the privacy of the room, where no one could see my utter shamelessness. What a gem - Toronto is lucky to have this market. It's one of the finest in the world and I can't wait to go back. Go there on a Saturday and really take your time. Go hungry and eat well, you won't be disappointed. Skip silly tourist sights and check out the markets. St. Lawrence has something for everybody, young or old. You will NOT be disappointed. Oh! And if you see the mustard stand and see a man who looks like the colonel from KFC, talk to him. He is amazing...and moustaches like that definitely seem to make a man more official. At least when it comes to mustard!
