| - I've spent over $2500.00 at Star Nursery in July and August 2016. Three shrubs died in the summer heat ($150.00), given their 1 year warranty, I took the dead plants to Tropicana for a refund. Cashier at Tropicana basically said no refund, issued me a store credit, closed the register and left without comments. Still in a state of disbelief, I decided to call Tropicana store, where I bought most of my plants and asked again for the return policy.
Manager at Charleston said basically they don't give refund. I explained I had already bought replacement to the dead plants a week ago and do not need store credit, as my landscape project is finished. She asked me to bring all receipts in the same day for further review. After looking at my receipt, she said:
1) I should have brought the dead plants to the original store, as each store carry different items (no signs on wall, not written on receipt, is she just making this up ?)
2) Store manager said the replacement plants were bought under landscapers account, so those plants are not under warranty. But those dead plants were not under landscaper account. She said it doesn't matter. I'm lucky I got a store credit. If I let my landscaper buy all the plants under his account (4% discount), there'd be no warranty at all. Lucky me, I guess!
This is the most convoluted warranty. If your landscaper bought the plants, best of luck to your yard, in the harsh Vegas climate. So if a harsh winter hits, $2500 worth of plants goes into thin air. The manager basically had a reason for every question why I'm not entitled to a refund. Bottom line was I wasn't going to walk out with my money, even thought I shown all my receipts.
From what I can gather, Star offers no warranty if contractor buys plants. Regular customer are offered 1 year warranty in the form of store credit, at the same store they are bought. And plants have to be dead to qualify for warranty. If you brought back a half dead plants, Star won't do anything for you. While there may be additional rules and exclusions in their return policy, I really don't care to find out. Won't be shopping at Star in the future. This whole thing over 3 shrubs has put a real bad taste in my mouth. They saw on the receipts I've spend over $2500.00 in the last month, and to lose a customer this way over $150.00, that's bad business sense. Not to mention FALSE ADVERTISEMENT on their warranty policy.
As for me, $150.00 bought me a huge lesson on why I should go back to Home Depot for my plants, where they would gladly refund you money for returned plants, dead or alive, or just cause you want a different plant.
