  • Take yourself way back to early October, 2012. The leaves were beginning to fall on the ground, the Mayan prophecies still lingered in our fears, and Thanksgiving was right around the corner. My sister in-law entrusted me with picking up something sweet so the first thing I thought of was pumpkin pie. Afterall, the Fall is Pie Season and Thanksgiving is Pie Day. Fuck you turkey! The first place I thought of when looking for a place to buy a pie was The Pie Shack. There was one at the Beaches when I lived out there and to my lament, I had never tried it. When I heard the news of one opening in The Junction I thought, "Perfect! Let me taste your ware" Thanksgiving was on Monday. Playing it pie-safe, I went to get ours on Sunday. They were officially closed but there was a nice, (pretty) girl inside filling in pie-related orders for what I assume is their busiest pie-weekend of the pie-year. Being nice, (pretty) she was able to find it in her pie-shaped heart to sell me a pumpkin pie, and save me from the pie-wrath I would endure due to the hands of my pie-awaiting sister in-law if I showed up without pie-in-hand the next day. Now here is the part that makes this review a negative one. The pie was a fair to midland looking pie. About 10 inches in diameter and about 2.5 inches high. The nice (pretty) girl rang it up and charged me $25 for it. Now, in the grand scheme of things, that's an easy sum of money to pay and does not affect my mortgage and it didn't ruin Christmas. But $25 is a ridiculous amount of money to charge for a fucking pie. I paid it because the girl was so nice, (pretty) and she let me in while the store was closed... but what the fuck? I don't care how many old dogs and vintage bikes you put outside of your establishment; you can't rob your consumer out of their hard earned, (or inherited) money! I took it to my sister in-laws and asked her, my mom, and another relative how much they would pay for the pie before them. They all agreed it was a nice looking and great tasting pie. They answered between $8-$12. When I told them I paid $25 for it, there was an audible gasp from all three ladies. I later told all the gals at work I paid $25 for a pie at The Pie Shack. Again; an audible gasp! It made me laugh out loud because the reaction was exactly the same! Time passed and I got to thinking; look at the location these Pie Shack's are situated in. The Beaches, The Junction, and The Kingsway. Three neighborhoods where housing is very expensive, and three neighborhoods where there is a very high annual income. Why place them there? Are rich people more likely to eat pie? No, but rich people won't bat an eyelash at a $25 pie! Hell, I bet rich people even buy name brand Mr. Noodle and not the shitty ones at No Frills! I bet they wouldn't even spend an afternoon writing a scathing review of their local, friendly pie shop while my wife has the flu and my baby is crying.
