| - I had Jaycox out on a Sunday morning (voice mailed them in 2 a.m. hour) and followed with a call in 6 a.m. hour --and was wowed when I was told I would be the second call of the day.
My A/C was running, but not cooling. Ice had formed on one of the lines outside. I turned the cooling feature off, and let the fan run to help circulate air to de-ice the unit.
In the mid-part of the 8 a.m. hour, Scott came by and added R-22 Freon to my 11-year-old unit. He said it was possible there was a leak in the coils.
Scott said that the low Freon likely made it hard for my A/C to work and increased my energy bills. I now understand the importance of having a seasonal check. He recommended I have the unit checked again when it is at least 80 to 90 degrees out. He said we could then review how much Freon has leaked out and then further weigh options (e.g., 1) add more Freon; 2) examine system for leak location --possibly replace coils; 3) replace entire unit).
He also showed me how to feel the outside tubing that should be cool to touch (not icy or hot) --about 45 degrees. He pointed out how to feel the air from the fan when it is running. He also showed me where to look for water draining on the other side of the house (the lower pipe should have water coming out, the upper pipe should not). Finally, he inquired if I had changed my filters, and I stated I had.
On the weekends, a surcharge of $20 or $25 is added to the regular service fee (around $65)...My total service fee was $85, and I was charged $240 for three pounds of Freon. (Total bill $325.)
Freon R22 is being phased out, and this is driving up the price. Scott said it used to be around $30/lb. He said at some point, it may not be available, and it was unknown how a system would work with a mix of R-22 Freon and a new coolant. --This would be something to consider if I was trying to prolong life of my A/C system by just adding coolant, and R-22 Freon no longer available.
I appreciated the rapid response and the education. I find Jaycox to be very honest and very reliable!
