  • Dooney's is not my favorite bar in the Annex. But then again, I'm not really part of the key demo they seem to be going after. The fake books in the front windows, the older clientele and the heavily martini-influenced menu all seem to go after a "mature" crowd with an air of (at least attempted) professorial sophistication. I have stopped in there on a girls' night martini quest, or during peak patio season hours where it was the only patio spot on the strip that was available immediately. And the novelty martinis (many of which are cleverly named after Prime Ministers' sons, lol) are tasty and well made. They also have a nice dessert menu and a jar of really delicious fresh baked cookies. The food to me seems a bit overpriced for the quality, but I have only had appetizer type food and not main course meals. The downside for me may be an upside to Dooney's for you - the sense of self-reverent hush once you step inside. The feeling comes across that you should keep your voice low and not laugh too much or too long. And maybe when I'm older, I'll look forward to that (heh, prob not). For now, though, I like the option to have some laughs and tell some stories, so long as the group I'm with isn' t rowdy and obnoxious I'm not sure what the problem is. I have been with groups that felt very uncomfortable as under-40s and have had service and food issues. The other long-running joke my friends and I have about Dooneys is that they always seem to close up shop early, it's like the old saying "the streets roll up at midnight". I've seen listings that claim it's open to 2am, but from what I recall the patio and kitchen close up shop pretty early compared to most of the places around town. And the bar is almost always dead empty before midnight. My advice? Take Mom there for dessert to or head over for a fruity cocktail to kick off the evening, then head out somewhere else to finish the night where you can let your hair down a bit more. **Update After writing my initial review I was puzzled at seeing the listing of Dooney's hours being late, as I have gone in at around midnight only to see the staff closing up. A very kind gentleman informed me that they had just closed (11:00pm on Wednesday night) and that the bar staff can close at their discretion if it is quiet, but that they always open at 10am and close at 12pm. At midnight if the place is still hopping, they will stay open until two, and if it is close to midnight and quiet they will also close early. MYSTERY SOLVED, lol.
