  • We're new to the area and we are looking for a good oil change and auto shop. Sun Devil Auto on Chandler was referred to me by one of the tire techs at costco. Tried them for an oil change and the tire rotation which came included. Was surprised by the low cost (less than $25) for my late model minivan. Did have to ask them to criss-cross front tires to back as they just wanted to swap straight back. The svc rep said that because of their worry about directional tires, they swap straight back to front. But they were really nice about it and did criss-cross the tires for me when I pointed out that the tires were not directional and that it was a front wheel drive and that the Honda manual specifically said that because of this the front tires should be criss-crossed to the back on rotation. Now for the not great stuff. They told me that the brake fluid and power steering were 'dirty'. Maybe, but I just had all of that done 30k ago for my 60k tuneup. They said it should be done every 30k. (Honda, the mfg does not say that -- they say to go by the codes on the dash). Okay, I let that one slide. Next, they told me that the front struts and rear shocks are due for replacement by mileage. The rep even had me work the display model in the lobby to explain between good and bad condition for these. Then sometime later while talking about the tire wear (which would be spotty if the shocks/struts were an issue), we went out and looked at them while the car was hoisted in the air. The shocks/struts looked peachy keen and the tire wear was exceptionally even (because I rotate every 7k miles and I inspect the car pretty frequently myself). When I pointed all this out the svc rep said that the note did say they were due based on mileage, not inspection by them. Kind of the edge of rationalizing there I think. If I did not know the basics about cars, I am certain he would have tried to schedule me to get all of that work done. That dropped their star rating for me quite a bit. Finally, this is what killed their rating for me: they said the battery was 'weak' and gave me the printout. Another surprise as we had just had the battery replaced (from Autozone) 3 months ago. I went back to the Autozone store and they tested it for me on the spot and it tested as a 'good' battery (in fact better than the meter line, which I saw). So someone is either mistaken or is lying. I don't know if it is this shop or if it is Autozone. Either way, I'm done with them as I do not want to take the chance. For those who are curious, I took a recommendation from the tech at autozone about a family owned shop in Gilbert called Kobars (813-6400). Will try them next.
