  • Ross amuses me. They have devised quite the strategy to extract a reasonable amount of free labor from their customers, allowing the store to hire a minimal staff. It's genius, really. Customers must sift through a variety of improperly racked, miss-matched clothing items scattered about a large room in sections ordered in sequences that do not make sense. After selecting a few articles, customers are then hearded into the fitting room area located in the back of the store. If a customer wishes to try on more than 8 items at once, they had better bring along a personal shopping assistant. Utilizing a fitting room at Ross involves the customer standing before a uniformed "loss prevention officer," hanging clothing on a special rack and counting aloud the number of merchandise they have selected to try on, then receiving a plastic number card. As I said, if the number exceeds 8, the customer must try on only 8 items at once, re-robe into their own outfit, return the plastic number card with all 8 items to a loss prevention officer, then retrieve 8 more items from their "shopping assistant (friend, family member)" and start all over. At any one time, there are probably 3-4 husbands standing outside of the dressing rooms with their eyes glazed over waiting for their wives to return and ask for 8 more items. Frankly, it's quite insulting and annoying to be considered guilty until proven innocent, but it's the price you pay for a good deal I guess. Honestly, though, who is stealing Ross clothes? I mean, come on! They're cheap! Stop behaving like animals! Since customers are militantly required to return all tried-on items to a loss prevention officer, Ross employees to not have to bother themselves with cleaning out dressing rooms (and believe me, they DO NOT!). This cuts back on the need to hire more than 1 or 2 people for the dressing rooms at a time. How efficient! In fact, employees do not even have to re-hang the clothing because the customer must, once again, hang items on a special rack and re-verbally count the number they are returning from the dressing room. Once a customer is ready to purchase their clothing, bonus, they are responsible for removing the hangers (once again) from their selected items and placing them on yet another special rack. This way, Ross can save money by reusing hangers rather than allowing customers to keep them and, score, fewer cashiers are needed on staff to get people through lines more quickly since the customer is helping to cut back on the time/labor spent de-hangering clothing. If you use a shopping cart, sorry, you can't bring it outside. There are tall poles bolted to each cart that reach past the height of the door frame so it is impossible to remove them from the store. This way, Ross does not need to spend the money employing someone to retrieve baskets in the parking lot. Did you buy a large or heavy item? Tough cookies! That's your problem! Ross also saves money on the restroom situation. They have made it so terribly inconvenient that it is used minimally (this must cut back on the water/soap/paper towel bill). If you ask to pee, you'll be cavity searched (joking) for merchandise before an employee will enter in a super secret code and open the bathroom door for you. Looking for designer clothes/purses at great prices? You'll find them at Ross, but if you are someone who knows designers, it will be obvious, from a hundred paces, that the items sold to Ross by a given designer are severely inferior to their department store counterparts. If you think you're going to get the same BCBG shoe or Michael Kors bag at Ross that you could get at Nordstrom, you're delusional. They don't even use the same materials. For the life of me, I cannot understand why a designer would choose to cheapen his or her brand for a discount store, but I digress... Overall, Ross customers can enjoy at least two perks. 1. Good deals and 2. If you need gum or bandaids, you can find them all over dressing room. Sure, they're used, but hey, they're free! One thing I can say for this location is that it does seem to carry decent items. I found 7 today. The next time I'm in the mood to be demeaned as a customer so that I can get some decent clothes at a cheap price, I will definitely return to this location!
