  • Vegas goes Venezuelan. These arepas and empanadas are the hottest things to come out of Venezuela since their women! While they lack a sultry accent and their physical appearance isn't as stunning, these bites are just as alluring as any Venezuelan vixen. In pursuit of another worthy eating destination away from The Strip, I learned of Viva Las Arepas from a local. It is on S. Las Vegas Blvd at Oakey just north of The Stratosphere. Before they were here, they operated out of a food stand. The shredded chicken empanada ($2.75) was warm and crispy. After taking the first bite to expose the inside, I recommend throwing some of their green sauce into that bad boy to kick up the spice. My garlic shrimp arepa ($7) was piping hot (in temperature) so I had to wait for it to cool down. It was moist and slightly started falling apart on me as I ate it. They stuff it with plenty of juicy shrimp so it was satisfying despite the challenge of taking it in. All other arepas cost less than the shrimp one. The shredded beef/Mechada ($6) is often my go to arepa. You can bet I'll be back to get some nice Venezuelan ass too (or "pork butt" as it's called on their menu). This area isn't particularly desirable or Vegasy but I'll take some arepas and empanadas over uninspiring overpriced Strip food any day. For those that are on a mission to find quality authentic food, and couldn't care less about glitz and glamour, this is your place! Plus, the highly acclaimed Art of Flavors (gelato) is right next door (update/edit: it really isn't anymore as the Chef now works at Gelatology).
