  • So, if you are planning to join Urban Active, I suggest you try it first by getting a 7 days pass, and go during the hours you will be more likely going, perhaps your schedule allows for a better experience than mine. Another reviewer goes early in the morning, and his review seems to be quite on the good side. I used to go between 5-7 pm because of my job and I assure you, it is an insanely crowded, nasty place. This is a brand new, modern, big and well located gym. Unfortunately, it is a franchise and you get all the good and bad that comes with that. As any corporation, their main objective is market value and to please shareholders, give you a good service isn't priority. Staff is encouraged to sign up as much people as they can, and they try to tie you to a two year contract that might become a pain there to cancel. As a result of above corporate greed, the gym has become so crowded at peak hours that it isn't possible to have an enjoyable workout anymore. It is uncomfortable to walk around the facilities, people are exercising pretty much on every square inch they find available. Weights area is always packed with disrespectful meatheads, leaving their sweat on benches, dropping the weights on the floor, leaving dumbbells and weights out of order, etc and staff don't seem to bother in keeping some kind of order or at least encouraging these guys to be respectful towards other members by keeping the place neat and clean. I have seen even their own staff misusing the equipment, and that tells you a lot about the place. I go to the gym to have a relaxed, good time working out, but at Urban I got tired of having to adapt my routines to whatever equipment is available and cleaning up other peoples mess. However, if you decide to join, good for you, but take your time and read the contract carefully, even when the sales person tells you that's just some legal language they use everywhere else and not to worry about it. Yes, be worried, take it home and read it all as it contains some nasty things you need to know before signing in. They will be reluctant but they should give you a copy of the contract, so ask for it. They gave it to me after I insisted. After I read it, I went with the month-to-month plan, even when it is more expensive. Some people I know signed for a two-year contract without reading the agreement, then lived the nightmare of cancelling. Finally, you might want to check Club One Fitness which is very close, by Trader Joe's. It is a family owned fitness center that offers you more than a membership, also gives you service. There you will have a way better work out, plenty of equipment, exercising areas, courts and pools and it never gets crowded to the point it interferes with your routine. Meatheads are rare. Members are normally respectful and the place is clean and organized. No, it isn't cheap as Urban Active, L.A., Bally's and those kind of franchises, but well, I guess you get what you pay for.
