  • I've lived in Pittsburgh for a year now, and have shopped at its different grocery brands (Trader Joe's, Market District - Giant Eagle, Whole Foods, and Aldi), and must say Whole Foods is one of my least favorite grocers in the area. My main complaint about Whole Foods is the quality of its fresh produce (the only products I buy). I don't have much experience with the prepped foods or snacks sold at the store. Quality: 3/5 My biggest complaint with Whole Foods is its quality of produce. In the past my go-to grocer was Market District, but since moving closer to Whole Foods I decided to give it a try. On two occasions I found that the produce I purchased from Whole Foods was not as fresh or 'good' as the produce I traditionally purchased from Market District. For example, I purchased a small basket of white nectarines from Whole Foods two weeks ago. Upon biting into one the same day I bought it, the fruit turned out to be very soft on the inside, with the white flesh basically a mushy mess. All the white nectarines from that little basket (costing me some $5) had this texture. Atmosphere: 4/5 Yes, the iconic atmosphere of Whole Foods is one of pristine perfection. But, as a grocery shopper, do you really care that much about how well your grocer's environment is if the quality and price of the place don't make up for the sky-high costs? Selection: 4/5 To me, the selection is very mediocre. I find the fresh produce section at Whole Foods to be quite lacking, compared to Market District. Its hot foods and prepped foods sections are better , supposedly (my colleagues say so but I never buy prepared foods). Value: 3/5 Pretty poor value given the quality of its produce and the comparable nature of most of its products to other supermarket produce. It would probably cost an extra 30% for me to buy the same things I normally buy at Whole Foods as compared to a similar trip to Market District or Trader Joe's.
