| - Hem's is the ideal dive bar: it's local, convenient, cheap, and VERY difficult for underagers to get in.
Several of my experiences with Hem's involve late night shot pitchers with a group of friends, but most recently I went to happy hour at Hem's with a friend and we ended up spending the night eating apps, drinking several pitchers, and playing trivia. At first, the bar was empty, but Hem's isn't usually the go-to happy hour place. After a while, more people came for food, drinks, and trivia, and in no time the room had a nice din to it.
We ordered the spinach artichoke dip, a summer shandy pitcher, a miller lite pitcher, cheese fries, and two bottles of blue moon (yeah, we had ourselves a day). Promoters were even walking around with free shots, which were quite delicious!!
Out of the two appetizers ordered, I enjoyed the spinach artichoke dip more. The dip was quite thick but flavorful, and the pita was fried, which left the pita a tad greasy and heavy with the rich, creamy dip. Nonetheless, still a great option if you're looking to indulge. On the other hand, the cheese fries were not that impressive to me. It seemed as though they put shredded cheese on bland fries and broiled it. I do not think I will spring for that option again.
In terms of libations, the beer was COLD and PLENTIFUL. At the end of the night, I expected to get bombarded with a huge check, but all of that was still under $15. In conclusion, you can get drunk for cheap, and the eats are decent.
