  • I'm a little bummed to read all the negative reviews of Paulette's because I had such a good experience eating doughnuts and chicken this past weekend. We woke up "early" (well, it was early for us considering it was the long weekend), with the goal of getting there for 11:00 - the time they start serving chicken. I had heard so much about this little shop, I was worried we would get there and discover that everything was already sold out. Luckily, we didn't leave disappointed. The shop itself is tiny. Three employees in adorable 1950's ice cream shop uniforms take your orders amidst Tiffany-blue walls. There isn't a lot of room to sit around and eat (bar stools only, with no tables), so be prepared to grab your food and go. We ordered three doughnuts (the D'Oreo, the Rootbeer Float, and the Strawberry Jam) and an order of 1/2 chicken. The 1/2 chicken comes with four pieces of chicken, a side, and a dipping sauce. We opted for the mac and cheese and maple chili dipping sauce. We also got two drinks. The total bill came to about $30. Everything was prepared really quickly, and packaged up in a brown paper bag. Given the lack of seating, an impromptu picnic was in order, and we took our spoils to a nearby park, plopped ourselves in the shade, and dove heartily into our chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly, with a delightfully crispy batter. The maple chili dipping sauce added a nice flavour, but I found it wasn't needed to enjoy the chicken. The mac & cheese (which was covered in crispy chicken batter pieces) wasn't as warm as I would have liked, but it had grown on by the time we got to the end of the bowl. It was definitely more than enough food for the two of us. The biggest disappointment came when we got home. We decided we were the most skeptical about a Rootbeer flavoured doughnut, so we decided to try that first. Alas, no Rootbeer doughnut could be found in the bag. The shop had gotten quite busy by the time our order was package and they accidentally gave us two D'Oreo's, and our strawberry doughnut instead. On the bright side, the D'Oreo doughnut was delicious. The icing was sweet, but not overwhelming, and the doughnut was really soft and moist. I am usually a fan of yeast-based doughnuts as opposed to Paulette's cake-like doughnuts, but I still found it really enjoyable. The Strawberry doughnut felt a little uneven (a little too much doughnut and not enough strawberry jam) but was still quite delicious. All in all, I would definitely visit Paulette's again for a snack or a picnic lunch. The price may be greater than Tim Horton's or KFC, but the quality of product was definitely was superior to its fast-food counterparts. That being said, given the price (and the calories!) visiting Paulette's won't be an everyday thing for us, but it's definitely worth a revisit.
