  • How can anyone not love this park? Aside from seeing family, it's the highlight of my visits to Ohio. From the great blue heron rookery off Bath Road, where we saw a good-sized snapping turtle considering crossing the road (he did not like our attempts at dissuading him and wandered back the way he came; video to follow), to the beaver pond (complete with snapping turtle, other turtle, fish, and muskrat, nearby great blue heron and my first ever green heron), to the tiny frogs crossing the towpath, to the beautiful and sometimes deserted downtown stretch near Main St. and the old Goodrich plant, and the rushing waters in historic Peninsula, we only scratched a portion of the surface. The old canal locks, historic buildings, beavers, and smart people that preserved this land for the enjoyment of bikers, walkers, and local wildlife have made this a regional and national treasure. We owe a huge debt to the late Congressman John Seiberling and a Congress that used to act for the betterment of the people, the country, and the planet.
