  • DECEPTIVE SALES PRACTICE ! We were going through phoenix airport to get our car (in a hurry like all others traveling- Hertz prays on you here). So we get to the counter and were told to speak into the box.. So it catches me a little off guard to have to speak to a computer with a person inside the screen. No biggie, but new to me. The girl in the screen asks me " Do you want to prepay for gas here, it's cheaper than outside the airport and if you drive less than 75 miles it's only going to cost you $13.99 ? " So I'm thinking that they are going to be fair and charge me for the gas I use or something like that. NOT THE CASE ! What they really mean and INTENTIONALLY DON'T tell you is this " If you prepay for gas, we'll charge you for a full tank and whatever gas you leave in the tank is ours to keep for free when you come back". Their sales practice is intentionally misleading because they are trying to catch you off guard, and they caught me. They did this with insurance by the way and I'll get back to that in a minute. After I left with the car I got my wits about me and thought something fishy with the gas purchase which cost over $ 40.00 . I called them and said this sounds fishy as I thought I would be charged only $13.99 for 75 miles. Well the girl on the end of my phone line explained what I didn't initially understand (That I paid for a full tank and will get no refund for unused gas". I told her the sales tactics were predatory and that I didn't agree. So when I brought the car back I filled the tank myself 2 miles from the airport with $8.62 in gas, and I topped it off twice to make sure it was full to the brim. When I got there I told them and showed them my receipt and said " I filled your tank, here's my receipt, now pay me back for the initial prepaid gas purchase". They basically told me to go pound sand and that they didn't give refunds on ANY unused gas. This is why I am here on trusty YELP ! To let you all know that Hertz uses PREDATORY SALES PRACTICES ! They did the same thing with the insurance offer by the way. The girl in the computer screen said "Would you like insurance for any missed coverage ? it's only $30 ?" This question is leading towards selling me insurance I don't need. Hertz knows that if you have full coverage insurance with your own ins co that you are covered 100%, but they intentionally neglect to tell you this. Instead they use the rush of the airport and the sense of urgency that travelers have to get them to make rush decisions, thus being able to suck more $ out of their pockets. Their sales tactics are intentionally misleading and predatory towards weary travelers. This company is immoral. I did call my insurance and found out i was fully covered for rental car damage and didn't get screwed there, but they are not bothering to address my issue of a full tank of gas that they tricked me out of. Don't use Hertz if you want a moral business partner, they have no morals.
