| - I think that I am a tough, but fair reviewer. I don't often pass out 5 stars unless I am just blown away. I'm so happy at The Boulders and would love to give them 4 stars but I realize that the reasons I'm happy here don't have much to do with the amenities of the hotel. The natural beauty of this resort, peace and quiet and sounds and sights of the desert animals are all just beyond wonderful ( and I am not even a desert lover)! I'm also getting a phenomenal deal to stay here but if I were paying the usual $600+ per night I would be pretty disappointed. As I'm not paying that, I'm quite happy to escape snowy Colorado (ummmm, it's freakin MAY!) and lovin life here in my cute casita.
Let's run through the positives.
-love, love, love the casitas; the design, the comfort, privacy, patios. I was expecting just regular rooms in a hotel so this was a pleasant and unique surprise. Very large, well appointed, huge closet, wonderful bathroom. Wish the tub was bigger but...meh.
-this is a walking place...walk to spa, walk to pool, walk to room. They make it easy by offering golf cart rides anytime and I like the walking part but I feel I should mention it for those who can't easily walk.
-beds and linens are nice. Not frette sheets but good pillows, cozy beds and decent sheets. Huge plus.
- the usual robes, slippers, luggage racks, mini fridge, Keurig coffee maker.
- the cutest fireplace ever, feel like I'm in the flintstone house! Wish I could use it but too warm. Must be lovely on cooler days.
- good cable channels. I know, I should be looking at my view! But I like having the option.
-two pools, one at spa and main pool. Both are small but lovely. Nice chairs, lots of umbrellas and service seems good. It is off season though.
-$30 resort fee which is pretty normal but this includes all gratuities. Really like this! I've given one person extra money but so far no one else has deserved it.
Okay, not necessarily negatives but things one (ME) would expect at a hotel of this caliber.
-BETTER MENUS, all around. We are way the hell out here in Carefree/N Scottdale. Pain in the tush to leave the resort for dinner every night or for breakfast, etc and not that many great restaurants close by. The menus at all of the on property restaurants are limited and underwhelming. Food is ok. Nothing spectacular.
-spa is beautiful to look at. I was not impressed AT ALL with my massage. Very, very average. And for the price of services this spa should rock. And a lovely hot tub in dressing room but I never found jets and it wasn't very hot. Kind of confused. Lockers are weirdly small. Again, crappy products. Spa shop is ....meh.
-overall attitude of staff...meh. A few people have been really nice but in general no one seems to like their job much or take it seriously. A place like this should be ALL about customer service, smiles, hellos and good cheer. Not so much. And I've nearly been run over a few times by staff members flying thru on golf carts. Really rude.
- towels and products. Are you kidding me??? Towels should be fluffy and new and luxurious. Not so much. At this price the products should be bliss, bvulgari, l'occitane at least. The products are crap and the hotel staff doesn't even re stock them every day.
- pool. Better menu, nicer pool area, misters (this is Arizona!), cold face towels offered by staff or in a bucket, better towels. Should be more luxurious in general.
- there aren't many folks here right now but someone was above us last night and you can hear EVERYTHING. Fortunately they are gone and weren't noisy when they are here. But I recommend trying to get an upstairs casita or a stand alone so no one is above you. FYI.
- you are not close to the main stuff in Scottsdale. I don't mind, as this place is like home to me and I'm happy to drive around to go to my fave shopping, restaurants, etc but be aware that you will be about 20-30 min from the hub.
Hope this is helpful! I really love this place and if I got another great deal I would totally stay here again but for $600-900 , no way. There are SO many great hotels in Scottsdale, so you might want to shop around!
Enjoy!
